Air & water quality

1. Overview

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for the protection of air and water quality, and the control of pollution, waste, noise and radiation.

Council's Environmental Health Team works in conjunction with the EPA on a number of matters.

2. Air quality

The EPA works with businesses and industry to help them reduce their impact on the environment and use their resources more efficiently.

The EPA website provides important information regarding air quality and your environmental obligations as a business.

3. Water quality

As part of the administration of the South Australian Public Health Act 2011, Environmental Health Officers regulate high risk manufactured water systems(HRMWS).

High Risk Water Manufacturing System (HRWMS)

Information is available to owners and operators responsible for the control of legionella in High Risk Manufactured Water Systems; particularly cooling water systems and warm water systems.

High Risk Manufactured Water Systems must be operated and maintained in accordance with the South Australian Public Health Act (Legionella) Regulations 2013, the Australian and New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS 3666) and the Guidelines for the Control of Legionella.

A key role of Council in relation to HRMWS and legionella control includes annual registration and inspection in accordance with the above legislation of all registered systems within the City of Unley.

For more information and resources regarding the control of Legionella, visit the SA Health Website or contact an Environmental Health Officer on (08)8372 5111 or pobox1@unley.sa.gov.au .

** Note this only becomes an issue where complaints are received regarding existing business operations.
