A small Goodwood bar, which has grown increasingly popular despite some challenges during pandemic restrictions, has now expanded its premises.

Good Gilbert, adjacent to the Capri Theatre on Goodwood Road, took over neighbouring Cru Tapas Bar in August.

Owner Wilson Shawyer says the extension provided room for a more formal dining space alongside the bar and a broader menu.

‘It felt like it was a natural progression to have the two sites joined and trading as a single venue’ Wilson says.

‘Over the past eighteen months, the food culture behind our bar has continuously grown and we’d exceeded the capacity our kitchen could cater for. We were actually in the process of planning a full upgrade to the kitchen when the opportunity came up for us to slide in next door.’

Along with banquette seating and intimate lighting, patrons can expect full table service and an a la carte menu in the new space while the bar area remains more ‘snacky’.

Good Gilbert’s ever-changing menu boasts ‘classic French fare with a modern Australian twist’, plus wine ‘from every corner of the earth’.

For Wilson, one benefit of opening during the height of the pandemic two years ago was tapping into people’s desire for connection close to home.

‘We always provide a very interactive, engaging experience. We’ve set ourselves up so that there is something for everyone at every price point, in terms of both food and drink.

‘We’ve created an inclusive space, with a real sense of community, and I think people in Adelaide are proud of that and like supporting their own local people and businesses.’

Good Gilbert is located at 135B Goodwood Road, Unley.
