The City of Unley is getting a lot more colourful thanks to the work of local artist Nicole Black.

It’s hard to miss the stunning mural Nicole Black has just completed at Goodwood Library. A collection of vibrant hues, it features native flora, birds and insects and depicts diverse and spectacular local landscapes.

When asked what inspired her design, she says ‘My goal with these murals was that they would incorporate aspects of the local environment into the design, to put a spotlight and educate viewers on the beauty and fragility of our ecosystems.’

And there’s more to come! Nicole is about to create a second mural at Unley Library.

‘I was lucky enough to be approached by Council for this assignment in three stages – while the murals will be connected visually, the spaces will have their own feel and identity.’

‘To know these works will provide the backdrop for storytelling areas in the libraries for years to come makes me both proud and grateful to have worked on this project.’

After living in Melbourne’s inner suburbs, Nicole’s return to Adelaide saw an appreciation of her natural surroundings and their details grow.

‘I love that we have access to beautiful landscapes only a short drive from the city.’

Most days, you’ll find Nicole in her studio, as she paints her bright, vivid designs on canvas and teaches art classes to budding students. She also curates and is preparing for an upcoming exhibition at the Bowerbird Markets at the Wayville Showgrounds in May.
