The dangerously delectable combination of coffee and chocolate features at Hark Café and Roastery in Malvern.

Hark was founded by Theo Engela and Sam McKay in response to the popularity of specialty in-house roasted coffee. The duo, no strangers to the food and beverage industry, looked for a point of difference they could introduce to their business to distinguish themselves from competitors.

With Sam’s coffee roasting experience and Theo’s knowledge of the winemaking process as co-owner of SA artisan wine company Chaffey Brothers, the pair wanted to explore a similar production method with chocolate.

The duo’s bean-to-bar chocolate range features a selection of cacao bean flavours sourced from Ecuador, Brazil, Columbia, and Peru. A fluid-bed roaster – preferred by aficionados - is used for roasting both coffee and cacao beans. The process extracts depth of flavour and ensures consistency across each batch.

With rich aromas oozing out of their Duthy Street headquarters, Theo and Sam have found an enthusiastic community who love Hark’s elegant dark coffee and robust chocolate.

Staff member Alejandro Rubio says they make ‘high quality coffee, up with the best in South Australia’ and ‘attract a mature palate’ in those who appreciate the quality and complexity of their products. Their customer base isn’t limited to connoisseurs; the thriving business has a range of food and beverage choices which ensures there’s something for everyone.

Unley can lay claim to a truly cosmopolitan lifestyle among its diverse community, with a wide range of culinary offerings valued by residents. Duthy Street’s popular Malvern precinct draws customers from across Unley, Fullarton, Parkside, and beyond - a perfect location for Hark’s delicious treats.

Hark Café and Roastery is located at 65 Duthy Street, Malvern.
