The City of Unley is committed to fostering a smart, sustainable, and inclusive local economy.  The Circular Champions Pilot, in partnership with Unley Road Traders Association and Plastic Free SA was designed to help local hospitality businesses reduce single-use plastics and embrace circular economy solutions.  This initiative is part of our broader strategy to support businesses in adopting practical, impactful sustainability measures.

Single-use plastics contribute significantly to environmental pollution and initiatives like this can lead the way in reducing waste at a local level.  Four Unley Road hospitality businesses participated in the pilot including:

  • Local Kitchen Co
  • Pickle in the Middle
  • A Mother’s Milk, and
  • Spread

Each business trialled one or multiple circular economy solutions. The City of Unley provided financial support to cover the cost of participation and remove financial risk for businesses. Businesses trialled a range of reusable systems, including Reusably’s stainless steel cups and containers to reduce takeaway packaging waste as well as Fleurieu Milk’s keg system, replacing single-use milk bottles. This pilot was an opportunity to lead, support local traders, and meet sustainability goals in a practical, measurable way and we encourage other businesses to explore circular solutions. Watch the video below to hear from the businesses involved.
