Footpath trading for fixed business

Many fixed business operators wish to utilise the footpath space in front of their business to display merchandise and other objects associated with trade.

Council supports the use of public footpaths and spaces for footpath trading within a policy framework, with the objective of the Footpath Trading Policy being to find a balance between the various stakeholders' interests in public areas that are used for footpath trading.

The Footpath Trading Guidelines speak to the layout, design and appearance of footpath trading elements, including:

  • tables/chairs;
  • merchandise displays/objects;
  • enclosures;
  • canvas screens;
  • plastic blinds;
  • removable umbrellas;
  • planter boxes/pots;
  • gas heaters; and
  • lighting.

Applications for footpath trading permits will be considered on their individual merits. The Footpath Trading Guidelines will be used to assess each application to ensure consistency and equitable allocation of the available footpath, whilst ensuring pedestrian safety and accessibility.
